Caramelized French Onion Dip
When my kids were young, almost every weekend for sleepovers and movie nights I would make French Onion Dip. Good ole Lipton Onion Soup Mix and Sour Cream! My secret ingredient was a dollop of Mayo, not only increasing the amount but making it taste so much better.
Well, now that I’m older and wiser, I know that I was feeding my kids nothing but sodium and chemical-filled snacks…ugh!!!
Even though I’m older, I still love French Onion Dip, but now I make it from scratch. It’s much more decadent and healthier—well, as far as fattening dips go…lol!
If you’re a dip lover like me, be sure to check out my Beer Cheese Dip, Mexican Street Corn Dip, and Garden Vegetable Herb Dip too.

Why You’ll Love This
My Caramelized French Onion Dip is a takeoff of French Onion Soup, and it is delicious!
In order to give it the depth of flavor you want to achieve, you need to caramelize your onions. I choose to use a combo of Vidalia onions and a little red onion for color. Try not to substitute the Vidalia onions as they are sweeter and give the dip that yummy flavor you’re looking for.
The onions become sweet and jammy, and when they’re mixed with sour cream and mayo, you get a creamy, savory dip that is hard to stop eating.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- Vidalia onions
- Red onion
- Garlic or garlic powder
- Butter
- Olive oil
- Worcestershire sauce
- Red wine (optional)
- Salt and pepper
- Sour cream
- Mayonnaise
The Vidalia onions are really the star here. Their sweetness is what helps create that classic French onion flavor.
My secret little additions are a splash of red wine, some Worcestershire sauce, and a clove of garlic. You don’t really taste the garlic, but it gives a great flavor to the dip.

How to Make It
To caramelize onions, you just cook them low and slow in a bit of butter and olive oil.
Start by melting the butter and olive oil in a pan. Add the onions and garlic and sauté for about 5 minutes.
Add the red wine, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper and continue to sauté on medium-low heat until the onions are nice and browned, about 15 more minutes. Stir often so the onions stay soft.
Once you have cooked these for about 15–20 minutes, they will turn a beautiful shade of golden brown and get sweet and jammy!

Let the onions cool, then chop them into small pieces.
Add the chopped onions to a bowl with your sour cream and mayo. Stir this yumminess up and you are ready to indulge in a delicious version of a classic!
What to Serve With It
I like to serve this with chips or pretzels.
I found some yummy gluten-free tri-color chips that were delicious, and of course classic Lay’s Ridges are always a favorite.
If you must be healthy, you can also serve a nice crudité platter with:
- Celery
- Carrots
- Tri-color peppers
They are absolutely delicious dipped in this creamy, golden brown, sweet and savory dip.
This dip is perfect for game day and looks right at home alongside Jumbo Jalapeño Poppers, Potato Chip Chicken Bites, and Tater Tot Mini Cheeseburger Bites.

When to Serve It
This is the perfect dip for:
- Movie nights
- Sleepovers
- Game day parties
- Holiday gatherings
- Casual get-togethers
- Weekend snacking
It’s one of those classic appetizers that everyone seems to gather around.
Final Thoughts
This creamy, golden brown, sweet and savory dip just might become one of your new favorites.
It takes an oldie but goodie and brings it to a whole new level by caramelizing the onions and combining them with sour cream and mayonnaise to create a craveable dip that everyone loves.
Happy Dipping!
