During Fall I like to pull out the heavy hitters like dark rum.

This cocktail is similar to a Moscow Mule but you use dark rum instead of vodka.

They say the name dark & stormy came from sailors in Barbados back in the day because the color of the drink reminded them of storm clouds.

Well…no storms ahead for me when I’m sipping this!

Choosing the Rum: A Key Ingredient

When it comes to crafting an exceptional very Dark and Stormy, the choice of rum is crucial.

During the Fall season, it’s all about embracing those rich and robust flavors.

Opt for a quality dark rum that brings warmth and depth to your cocktail.

One popular option is Bacardi Dark Rum, renowned for its smoothness and character.

Alternatively, you can delve into the world of authenticity by using Gosling Brothers’ dark rum, the original choice for this cocktail.

Creating the Very Dark & Stormy

Making the Very Dark & Stormy is an absolute breeze.

You’ll need just a few ingredients and simple steps to enjoy this marvelous drink in no time. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 oz Dark Rum (Gosling or Bacardi)
  • 6 oz Ginger Beer (Gosling or Fever Tree)
  • 1/4 oz Fresh Lime Juice (Juice of half a lime)
  • 1 Lime Wedge (for Garnish)

1. Prepare The Glass:

Begin by filling a tall glass with ice.

This will ensure your drink stays refreshingly chilled throughout the sipping experience.

2. Add Ginger Beer:

Pour 6 oz (approximately half a can) of your chosen ginger beer into the glass.

The ginger beer’s effervescence will add a delightful fizz to your cocktail.

3. Zest with Lime:

Squeeze the juice of half a lime to extract around 1/4 oz of fresh lime juice.

Add this zesty elixir to the ginger beer, introducing a tangy and citrusy element to the mix.

4. Float the Dark Rum:

The magic touch lies in layering the dark rum on top.

Slowly pour 2 oz of dark rum into the glass, allowing it to float gracefully above the ginger beer and lime juice.

5. Garnish with Elegance:

To add a finishing touch, garnish your Very Dark & Stormy with a lime wedge.

This not only enhances the visual appeal but also complements the flavors of the cocktail.

The Art of Selection: Ginger Beer Matters

When it comes to ginger beer, the choice matters more than you might think. While the name might suggest otherwise, ginger beer is non-alcoholic.

For an authentic and top-notch experience, consider using Gosling Brothers’ ginger beer, which pairs perfectly with their dark rum.

Another excellent option is Fever Tree ginger beer, known for its exceptional taste and quality.
