Strawberries are abundant and delicious this time of year, so I hope you’re feeling patriotic this Memorial Day and honor someone who served our country with these sweet and scrumptious strawberries! Ready to impress? Follow these simple steps…

Step 1: Clean Your Berries the Right Way
Store-bought strawberries can carry pesticide residue or mold spores, so don’t skip this step.
Make a cleaning solution:
- 2 cups cold water
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
Soak the berries for 5–10 minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Dry them completely on a cloth, and gently pat each one dry to remove all moisture — this helps the chocolate stick properly.

Step 2: Set Up Your Dipping Station
You’ll need:
- A tray of white chocolate or vanilla candy coating
- Microwave
- Parchment paper or a silicone baking mat
Melt the chocolate:
Use the directions on the packaging to avoid overheating. White chocolate can burn quickly, so go slow and stir as needed.

Step 3: Dip for the Red & White Effect
Hold the berry by its green leafy top and dip it about two-thirds of the way into the melted white chocolate. Leave the top third bare so you get that classic red, white, and blue look.
Pro tip:
Place the dipped berries on parchment or wax paper right away to let them set slightly before adding sugar.

Step 4: Add the Blue Sparkle
While the chocolate is still tacky (not fully dry), it’s time to bring on the blue!
Skip the dunk — sprinkle instead:
Pick up the berry gently and sprinkle blue sanding sugar over the bottom third. This gives a clean, festive finish without clumping the chocolate.
A spoon or small bowl works great to control the sugar and keep things neat. Be patient and aim for a defined line between the white and blue.

Step 5: Chill and Serve
These are best served cold, and you can absolutely make them a day ahead.
Storage tips:
- Refrigerate in a single layer
- Keep away from humidity to prevent the sugar from melting
- Enjoy within 24 hours for best texture and appearance

Patriotic Berries
Equipment
- 1 Microwave
Ingredients
- 1 LB Strawberries Cleaned and checked for bruising
- 1 Box Vanilla Candy Coating White Chocolate melting trays found at Target – otherwise use white chocolate melts or morsels according to directions
- 2 TB Blue Sanding Sugar Amazon
Baking Soda Bath
- 4 Cups Cold Water
- 2 Tsp Baking Soda
Instructions
- Clean berries in the baking soda bath then dry on a cloth and individually dry each berry to eliminate any moisture
- Put out a sheet of Parchment Paper or rubber sil pat sheets
- Melt White Chocolate according to the directions
- Dip each berry 2/3 of the way in the chocolate leaving a nice line of 1/3 red at the top and place on the parchment
- Gently picking up each dipped berry carefully sprinkle the bottom 1/3 with the sanding sugar. Do not dip the berry in the sugar as it messes the chocolate and gets too thick. Either sprinkle it on carefully or use a spoon with the sugar to sprinkle it nicely on the bottom 1/3 of the berry
- Let the berries dry and serve immediately or refrigerate up to one day
